TightVNC Java Viewer Grows Into Fully Functional Desktop Application

Up until now, TightVNC Java Viewer used to be good mainly as Web applet. Older versions of the viewer were inconvenient for regular use as a desktop application. They worked well, but there was no autofill feature, no settings persistence, no history at all. The user had to fill in the form every time, even when connecting to the same machines repeatedly.

Now we've added these must-have features. New viewer allows you to select hosts you connected to, and automatically saves connection options per each host. And the most recent connection is pre-loaded into the form automatically. You don't need to enter anything twice.

Another useful feature, introduced in TightVNC Java Viewer, is built-in SSH tunneling. It lets you automatically create an encrypted virtual connection to a remote SSH server and send all data through this channel. If you care about security, we recommend using SSH tunneling for each TightVNC connection.

Improvements in TightVNC Server and Viewer for Windows

For TightVNC Server and Viewer for Windows, the version 2.6 is mostly a “bugfix” release. Nevertheless, we'd like to point a major change.

Screen rendering in new TightVNC Viewer for Windows can be more than 2 times faster as compared to the version 2.5.2. This update is particularly useful for those who experienced inconvenience with slow screen rendering.

Besides this major update, there is plenty of smaller changes:

What Is TightVNC? — Free Cross-Platform Remote Control Software

TightVNC is a free software package that shows the desktop of a remote PC and allows to control it with local mouse and keyboard, just like it was a local computer.

TightVNC includes three components:

  1. Server for Windows — makes it possible to control a PC remotely,
  2. Viewer for Windows — the client part which allows to view and control remote PCs,
  3. Java Viewer — a cross-platform “run-anywhere” client.

TightVNC is interoperable with wide range of VNC-compatible server and client software. For example, TightVNC viewers can connect to standard VNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, x11vnc, Apple Remote Desktop in Mac OS X, Xen/HVM, VMWare, Qemu etc.

What's Next?

TightVNC is actively developed. Our goal is to make remote control software available for all. Thus, we'll be porting our software to a bunch of different platforms and operating systems. Also, we have plans to redesign the user interface, improve the protocols, add more security, and so on.

Stay tuned! And thank you for your interest in TightVNC!
